Brightburn indeed burned bright in this dark tale of an evil superman. Brightburn is a thrilling, action packed, and brutally hopeless horror movie that is basically Batman's worst nightmare come to fruition. Brightburn is about a child landing from space in Bright Burn Kansas, just like another child who landed in Smallville, Kansas. The difference is unlike Clarke Kent, Brandon Breyer is not here to be the symbol of hope for Mankind, but the symbol of despair.
When Breyer lands he is taken in by Elizabeth Banks's and David Denman's Tori and Kyle Breyer. A couple who has been trying to conceive a child with no success, so when a child lands in their backyard Tori sees him as a blessing. Elizabeth Banks was the emotional backbone of this movie and led this movie with a powerful performance.
Brandon Breyer, portrayed by Jackson A. Dunn, was great as this evil incarnation of superman.
Dunn brought a chilling performance and drove it home by selling the disregard for human life that Brandon Breyer feels for this race of humans that is beneath him. He didn't feel like a super villain, it felt more like we were watching a super powered serial killer, an unstoppable psychopath, who truly felt no remorse or mercy.
The deaths were shockingly disturbing and graphic and really made you believe that if superman was real and went bad there would be no hope for humanity. It was very interesting to watch this movie's superman go down this dark path, an idea that has been a fear of Batman's for generations.
Brightburn is an extremely fun and exciting, albeit unoriginal story. Nonetheless you will have a great time watching this movie. The ending teased a larger and darker universe that I hope we can see soon.
